New Professors appointed at KISD

In early 2010 Köln International School of Design (KISD) was happy to announce the appointment of two new professors. Dipl. Designer Andreas Wrede was appointed to lead the teaching area of »Design and Identity«. Dr. Oliver Baron will preside over the area of »Design and Economy«.

Prof. Andreas Wrede was born in 1967 in Bonn. He studied Communication Design and Design at the University of Applied Science Köln (FH Köln). Since 2000 he has been tutoring at the FH Köln and the University Bonn-Rhein-Sieg. He is a founder member of the German Society of Design Theory and Research. Further he is co-founder and director of the design agency »causa formalis« and has been working for the FEI-World Equestrian Games Aachen 2006 and the European Central Bank.

Prof Dr. Oliver Baron studied literature sciences, sociology and educational science in Bielefeld and Berlin. In 2005 he was awarded a doctorate in Cultural Sciences at Europa University Viandra and New York University. He looks back on 10 years in the creative industry, 7 of which as a leading creative director in influential design agencies specialized in business communication and new media.

KISD conducting research project

Currently KISD is leading a wide-ranging international research project along with universities in Barcelona, Milano, New York, Poona, Hong Kong, Fukuoka, Auckland, Curitaba and Taipeh. The focus lies on the »reality of work organization at the desk«. At present there are 12 teaching assistants of KISD roaming the planet to join the teachers and students at those universities in their work on the project and participate in discussions. The project is anticipated to end in late 2011 with an exhibition featuring the project as well as a book and possibly even a conference.

COLOGNE DESIGN PRICE

On October, 23rd, 2009 the KÖLNER DESIGN PREIS was awarded for the second time, marking the start of an exhibition showcasing all nominee«˜s entries at the Museum of Applied Arts.

One of the two first prices was given to Bettina Huber of KISD for her diploma thesis innovative design of a biopsy device for the diagnose and treatment of breast cancer. The second price was awarded to another KISD diplomate: Bianca Bender convinced the jury with her dissertation dealing with status symbols. Thyl Junker and Jessica Stihl received commendations.

Max Zürker decorated at international junior competition

On November 4th, 2009 thirteen prices worth 25,000 Euro were awarded in six different categories at the internationally aligned junior competition »kurzundschön« (»niceandpretty«) hosted by West German Broadcast (WDR) and Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM). The jury sifted 330 entries from 10 european countries and made their choice: The 3rd price in the WDR-category »Packaging, trailer concepts for the WDR short film night 2009« went to KISD student Max Zürker for »Ballon«.

Nico Kläber under finalists in »Electrolux Design Lab 2009« competition

»Moléculaire« is the name of a futuristic 3D-printer for molecular food that will give chefs as well as consumers at home various new possibilities. The pioneering household utility concept by KISD student Nico Kläber was the only german entry to be selected for the final selection of the international design competition »Electrolux Design Lab 2009«.

KISD students to be funded

KISD students Anke Riemer and Andreas Unteidig were granted scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation, the largest and most prestigious organisation sponsoring the academically gifted. This continues the trend of KISD students convincing deciders within the complex selection process.

KISD presents itself in Milano

In 2009 KISD used the context of the Milano Furniture Fair to exhibit at SaloneSatellite conveying its progressive understanding of design. Amidst thousands of international exhibitors 12 students lead by Prof. Jenz Großhans and Prof. Björn Bartholdy showcased a selection of works titled »Design beyond Furniture« representing KISD«˜s twelve fields of teaching.

Their sophisticated booth, created exclusively for the SaloneSatelite embodies the wide spectrum of diverse and unconventional topics at KISD that enables students and professors to collaboratively push the boundries of traditional design.

Utilizing the distinct features of op-art along with »sinking« furniture the booth enters a playful relationship with its spatial dimensions and communicates the continuos effort to explore the limits of design. On large screens there were presentations of recent student designs from many areas. The presence on this fair was an exciting opportunity for KISD to present its uniqueness to an international audience.

Service Design Network Germany

We are happy to announce that the Service Design Network Germany has come alive! As part of the International Service Design Network the German chapter will have a special focus on pursuing the interests of the German Service Design community. Following up the IA Conference in Cologne the first official meeting of the SDN Germany »The Service Design Reception« will be held on May, 14th.

The founding of Service Design Network Germany is part of a process to strengthen the Service Design community worldwide. The SDN has grown a lot during the last year and the need of building national chapters has come up to represent the Service Design community all around the world.

SKISD students to successfully exhibit at Light & Building

For the first time in its history »Light and Building«, the leading trade show for light and electrical engineering created a special area for young designers. The campaign called »Young Design« enabled aspiring designers to apply for a free booth by handing in a lamp design. Four KISD students, one of which already graduated got the chance to present their lamp concepts and lamps.

Cultural Library is growing

Cultural Library is the name of a series of projects which serve as a platform for KISD and its international partners to research habits and rituals of everyday life and the use of products and rooms in relation to these. The associated research takes place in projects located in different cultural circles and takes into account the regional and structural circumstances.

Following projects in Tokio, London, Cologne and Taipeh the 11th Cultural Library Project 2009 was held between Cologne and Nairobi.

In the context of this project there will be a publication titled »Learning from Nairobi« put

out mid 2010. A project called »Cultural Library goes west: Curitiba/Brazil« lead b

Kölner Klopfer 2010 conferred

Every year KISD students get the opportunity to nominate designers for the »Kölner Klopfer«. They get a chance to introduce their nominee before a secret vote is instituted to elect a winner. To our knowledge the »Kölner Klopfer« is the only award in the world handed over by students.

It is a prerequisite for the laureate to personally accept the award. Last year Ingo Maurer was the one to receive the trophy, a silicone rabbit figure coated in golden varnish. This year KISD decorated Dieter Rams who joined us on May 6th to receive the honor.

KISD intl / Intl. Cooperations Center / Intl. workgroup funded by DAAD

26 international guests from 12 countries are studying at KISD during summer term 2010. Six nationalities are present in recently started MA »Integrated Design« program. Currently there are numerous KISD students at our partner universities in Taipeh, New York, Sydney,

Barcelona, Porto and our five european MEDes partner schools. Since September 2009 Dipl. Des. Jessica Stihl is in charge of the International Cooperation Center (exchange@kisd.de). As a member of the Internationel Committee she is responsible for planning and conducting international projects and contact partner universities. Together with the International workgroup she supports and informs international students. This year the International workgroup will be subsidized as a Local Collegiate ERASMUS Initiative (LEI) by German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD).

The computer game »TRAUMA« by Krystian Majewski (KISD Alumnus 2008) was nominated in three categories at the Independent Games Festival (IGF). »TRAUMA« was developed partly in the context of a diploma thesis at KISD titeld »Illucinated - The developement of a contemporary adventure game« > Link

»Just the nomination means a lot to me. I can establish new ties and my game gets lots of attention.«

Federal Government to fund KISD alumni going into self employment

Lena Hirche from llot llov

llot llov is pleased about the cooperation with Germany's most famous women's mag BRIGITTE. Together with the just released BRIGITTE lookbook they introduce the new products LUCI and JAMES.

Lena Hirche is working at llot llov as strategy designer and empirical design researcher. She considers her strength to be conceptual thinking, evaluation of design and spirit.

André Michel bei Storz Design

As head of the Industrial Design department Michel will be responsible for design development of products and the direction of the product design team. André Michel graduated from KISD in 2004. The 34 year old was able to gain valuable experiences working as a freelancer and modell maker at Mango Design, Braunschweig. Afterwards he worked side by side with Uwe Spannagel as a junior designer at Spannagel Design in Cologne. Before switching to Design Storz he spent four years as a Senior Designer at NOA Design, Aachen.

Thorsten Frackenpohl & André Poulheim win IF Product Design Award 2010

Thorsten Frackenpohl und André Poulheim are excited about their mobile phones Vodafone 540 and Vodafone 545 receiving the iF Product Design Award 2010.

The quintessential design of the 540 as well as its clever construction lead to a maximal thickness of 9mm. In addition high quality components like the battery cover made of metal and the chromed frame underline the elegance that shapes the brushed, almost jointless front of the device.

The Vodafone 545 enables customers in developing countries to access E-Mail and internet. Since PCs are too expensive and internet cafes rare the 545 combines everything neccessary into one compact, affordable device. To provide extended readability of entire websites and lengthy e-mails the 2.4» big screen was rotated in a horizontal mode. This makes an easy keyboard setup possible. Its strong, individual shape resembles expensive »smartphone«

Design theory and Design research

The latest book in the textbook series »Design theory and Design research« has been published; it was written by KISD professors Dr. Uta Brandes and Dr. Michael Erlhoff.

As a design student you need theoretical knowledge and design theory needs an empirical connection to real human needs. That being so this textbook provides an introduction both into design research and design theory. With technical competence and in a readable way this publication gives information on qualitative and quantitative methods of design research, offers a theory toolkit, perspectives into the future of design research and much more.«

Blended Studies

The research project Blended Studies at KISD conceptualizes, tests and evaluates innovative teaching and learning scenarios in academic design education. One example is the digital learning community KISDspaces which enables students to get information on current courses, have exchanges with fellow KISDies, work online on seminars and projects and review lectures. First evaluations showed that the usage of this platform continually increased since its launch in summer term 2008. It signifies an inherent part of teaching at KISD. Currently additional modules for KISDspaces are under development, such as KISDbiblio, a literature managment, and an online magazine called KISDbulletin. The project is lead by Prof. Philipp Heidkamp and Dipl. Inf. Elisabeth Kaliva MA.

Women and mobility 2025

In search of new creative ideas for their products Volkswagen repeatedly approached design students at their annual design forum. In 2009 Köln International School of Design (KISD) was selected among a variety of universities.

»The students illustrated in a remarkable fashion their ability to handle real-life conditions, working under tremendous time pressure, being exposed to the rigid judgment of experts, having to develop similarly experimental and befitting ideas«, said Elisabet Wurlich who oversaw the project on the part of VW.

A joint publication by VW and KISD titled »Women and mobility 2025« visualizes the project's results.

Uta Brandes (Publ.): From Vandalism to Fandalism

Are vandals threatening public safety? Projecting their own agenda onto public space. Orchestrating interventions, putting the city into a strange state. The authors of this book (everyone of which is current or former KISD student) put forward a new term for this, changing perspectives while articulating the diverse re-claim of public space in a sympathetic, ambivalent manner.
