The "Easy Pieces" are recurring projects at the KISD. They are short and fairly easy tasks meant to help study the basics of the design process.
"Easy Pieces: Typography" were held in the winter term 2003/2004 and lasted two weeks. The task was to create a name and a logo for a fictitious company. The design process was strictly controlled. Starting with a standard font, we were only allowed to work on one aspect of the logo each day.
I worked on a logo for the fictitious company "Kokomo", a record label for electronic music. For the logotype I used a very geometrical, condensed font echoing the rhythm of the name. The icon is an abstraction of a loudspeaker. The icon and the logotype contrast with each other creating tension.
The "Easy Pieces" were projects which I joined at the very beginning of my studies and it helped me in understanding the design process and to develop my own methodology.
Die Fingerübungen sind wiederkehrende Projekte an der Köln International School of Design. Sie dienen dazu, bestimmte Grundlagen des Designprozess anhand von kurzen, überschaubaren Aufgaben zu üben und zu studieren.
"Fingerübungen: Typografie" fanden im Wintersemester 2003/2004 statt und dauerten 2 Wochen. Die Aufgabe bestand darin, für ein fiktives Unternehmen mit einem bestimmten Namen ein Logo zu entwerfen. Der Prozess wurde dabei streng kontrolliert - ausgehend von einer Standardschriftart durfte man jeden Tag nur an einem Aspekt des Logos arbeiten.
Ich habe ein Logo für die Firma "Kokomo" entworfen, ein Plattenlabel für elektronische Musik. Für den Schriftzug habe ich eine sehr geometrische, gestauchte Schrift gewählt, die den Rhythmus des Namens aufgreift. Das Piktogramm ist die Abstraktion eines Lautsprechers. Piktogramm und Schriftzug bilden Aufgrund der gegensätzlichen Formensprachen einen spannungsreichen Kontrast.
Die Fingerübungen fanden zu Beginn meines Studium statt und halfen mir dabei, den Designprozess zu verstehen und eine eigene Vorgehensweise zu finden.
