Typoraum s/w

(type room b/w)

A short term project conducted by Prof. Björn Bartholdy (AV) in the summer semester of 2003.

The assignment: To design four typographic animations, 15 seconds each, in straight black and white for simultaneous projection on four connected walls. Use a phrase of your choice, spoken by yourself, as a fundament.

My animation features an excerpt from Villem Flusser's book Die Schrift. Hat Schreiben Zukunft?, page 10.

Alles Schreiben ist »richtig«: Es ist eine Schriftzeichen ausrichtende, sie ordnende Geste. Und die Schriftzeichen sind (mittelbar oder unmittelbar) Zeichen für Gedanken.

The home-made translation would be:

All writing is "right": It is a character-ordering gesture. And the characters are, more or less direct, symbols for thoughts.

In my animation I tried to take Flusser's words rather literally and show characters being ordered in various ways and unveil themselves as being symbols for thoughts (Gedanken in German). What appears to be small white dots in the preview actually are small letters.

Download

You can download or stream the first of the four animations in the following formats:

MPEG-2: 720x576, 15.5 MB (1 MB/s)
Windows Media 8: 720x576, 2.2 MB (0.15 MB/s)
Quicktime (Animation Codec): 720x576, 31.4 MB (2 MB/s)
