Contemporary design and most of its paradigms are dominated by products, which instantly reveal their function - and production technology, origin, age and other mentionable factors: these kind of products allegedly claim for themselves that they are self-explainatory and are subject to trivial, yet boring design paradigms. One might say that this is kinda educational but in the long run, this results in the deception of the user. 8D

Now lets get down to this one here. The unidentified objects we exhibit on DMY are about that certain leap in the dark, the adventure and secret. The misleading explorative argument with the object, such as in Rambo IV greek mythology, the where the audience / user, equal to the hero in the story, follows the call of the unknown. And afterwards returns - purged by the trials - as the prodigal son. You know (well it did not happen in Rambo).

The "unidentified object" is a coherent development, an experiment in a "overdesigned" world - although not to be confused with the total lack of design. An object - such as a black hole (you know that stuff in space) - absorbing its aura and its aesthetics and making its intention disappear. Such as the center of a black hole, consisting of extreme mass and denseness, the "unidentified object" is compression of meaning and relevance.

It kinda seems to be "empty" and shallow, but its not. The "unidentified object" takes over and opens new communication channels (such as Chloe O'Brian in 24) for the audience to that certain objects. Weird? Yes, weird. So...

LETS RECAP:

  • Hooray. Exhibition.
  • Design is concealed (and conceited 8D).
  • The user is mislead.
  • Design paradigma are overridden.
  • The user is encouraged to grapple with his environment, simultaniously redefining it. Resulting in fun time and feeling like mudkipz (pokemon).

You can download a handy PDF (3.7 Mb) with all this information and colored images 'n stuff if you want to. Unfortunately, because we are all busy students, its in "teh german". But this might also encourage you to learn some german and, you know, reapproach your language skills, eh.
