Visual Explorations and Spatiotemporal Reconstructions of the Ahr Flood Disaster

How can we document disasters that seem beyond understanding? From January 27 to 29, KISD students will present their design concepts for capturing the 2021 Ahr Valley flood and its lasting impact.

In today’s discussion of ecological crises, space is no longer just a passive backdrop but an active witness and archive of complex networks of events. The project “The Flood – Mapping Environmental Crises” is committed to exploring this catastrophe through a combination of thorough research and innovative visualization.

Mapping as Deep Inquiry

Going beyond the limits of traditional cartography, this project employs mapping as a critical epistemological tool to reveal the political, social, and cultural aspects of the catastrophe. Using open-source research, detailed report analysis, and digital 3D reconstructions, the project carefully deconstructs and reconstructs spatiotemporal patterns, social dynamics, and physical structures. The participants explore the complex tensions inherent in this transformative event and develop vital ‘counter-maps’ that uncover previously hidden perspectives behind the scenes of flooding and devastation.

This project was developed within the framework of the BMFTR-funded Career Cluster “Participatory Memory” (PLan_CV) and in collaboration with:
