KISD – Köln International School of Design of TH Köln is pleased to announce a further success story of its KISD-alumni. KISD graduate Leon Schniewind will be, together with an international team, co-designing the new visual design of the documenta 2022 in the German city of Kassel – with the documenta being one of the world’s most prominent international exhibitions for contemporary art.

For an international audience and for its 15th edition, the documenta in Kassel in the German federal state of Hesse will be opening again in 2022 from June 18 until September 25 and is this time labeled documenta fifteen. The exhibition is held every 5 years and features and presents works and projects of German national and international artists.

In 2022, the documenta will be co-curated by the Indonesian art collective “Ruangrupa”.  The latter non-profit organization is dedicated to foster and develop artistic ideas and concepts in a broad context of exhibitions, festivals, workshops, and research. The term ruangrupa originates from Indonesian language and, vaguely, means art space or space for art.

KISD – Köln International School of Design now, by means of the design know-how of its graduate Leon Schniewind, significantly contributes to the new visual appearance and design of the next documenta. In a special competition and selection process, Leon Schniewind (KISD B.A.-graduate in 2019) could be highly persuading and convincing through his experiences and previous works. Since September 2020, Leon is now as an Inhouse Designer working for documenta as a member of an international design team (Berlin-based brand agency Stan Hema and Indonesian design studio 4002) which will be developing the future visual design of all print and online media for the documenta fifteen in 2022.

KISD professor Iris Utikal, at KISD in charge of the area of expertise Visual Communication, significantly fostered the cooperation between documenta and KISD-graduate Leon Schniewind. Prof. Utikal says: “It is in particular in the months before the opening of an exhibition in which the visual design plays a crucial role for the public perception and serves as a media and visual platform for this huge event in art and the creative industries. As for each single documenta, the documenta fifteen in 2022 will be, in its visual design, be based on a specific design concept which represents the overall exhibition concept of all curators of the forthcoming documenta. As KISD – Köln International School of Design of TH Köln, we are now proud of contributing to making the documenta fifteen a successful exhibition.“
