Appropriation, conversion and conservation are common terms for the care and transformation of buildings. However, they are only partially suitable for describing the diverse informal ways of dealing with vacant buildings and deserted spaces. These practices can be assigned to the field of experimentation, collaboration and testing. The focus is not on the constructional project or the master plan. It is on the undefined places of the city, which are restructured through performative interventions. Their potential lies in the possibility of settings and spaces for action, which are to be understood as dynamic structures of spatiality and corporeality. This lecture explores the specific procedures by which existing buildings are transformed into spaces of possibility for new forms of theatre, urbanity and urban development. On the basis of selected actions and debates on city and performance since the 1970s, the artistic approaches to questions of preservation and further construction are discussed. The talk helps to reflect on a possible fusion of architectural and performative procedures. The practice of updating plays a central role: it creates the opportunity for the revival of built environments with unexplored potential and new perspectives on city, public and representation.
The lecture is happening online.
