In his bachelor's thesis »What should I say - A multiperspective documentation format«, Omid Fröhlich documents the international creative scene and sheds light on how young artists, designers and creatives are influenced by their environment.
In a world characterised by political unrest and social change, the functions of art and design as a critical mirror of society and as a means of expression are becoming increasingly important.
»What should I say about – « is a documentation format that arose from the approach of providing insight into the international creative scene. This part focuses on the young, emerging artists, creatives, and designers of the city of Valparaíso in Chile.
The unique vibe of the port city has historically attracted many famous poets and artists. At the same time, it has been the scene of many historical events, most recently the uprisings of the revolution »estallido social« in 2019.
Omid started an investigation into the creative scene, documenting works, participating in workshops, visiting studios, ateliers, and conducting interviews. This approach aimed to provide a comprehensive impression of how the designers are influenced by their environment, history, and tense political situation and how these factors are reflected in their creations. In close collaboration with a Chilean photographer, a correspondence was developed that serves as the foundation for the second issue of the magazine »What should I say–«. Interviews, portfolios, and photo essays complement this issue, incorporating various perspectives, voices, and viewpoints. This approach highlights young artists and counteracts the reproduction of certain clichés shaped by one’s own socialization.
For his work, Omid Fröhlich was nominated for the Kölner Design Preis 2024, which will take place on the 21st November.
