Iris Utikal studied communication design at the FH Düsseldorf, finishing with her diploma in design in 1991. Since 1985, she has increased her visual and communicative horizon in well-known design and advertising agencies in London, New York, Paris, Zurich, Madrid, and Tokyo. Until 1994, she was involved in the »Arbeitsgemeinschaft Loesch«. In 1994, she established QWER Design Kommunikation Beratung, together with Michael Gais. QWER specialises in the development and implementation of communication concepts for companies, cities, regions, cultural institutions, and events. To ensure a consistent implementation of its design concepts, QWER follows cross-media, interdisciplinary paths, focusing on corporate design and information design.

Since 1998, appointment as judge in communication design competitions (such as 100 Best Posters Berlin, Red Dot Award Essen, »Power X, Competition of Chinese Colleges of Visual Design«).
Since 2002, professor of typography and layout, conception and design at the Cologne International School of Design.
