In the winter semester 2023/24, KISD students developed ideas for improving urban cleanliness in Cologne in the “Circular Services” project, which was initiated together with the AWB and the City of Cologne.
The aim was to develop concepts that reduce waste and promote reuse and recycling. Following surveys of citizens and interviews with AWB Cologne’s street cleaning teams, the students identified key problem areas such as inadequate waste disposal facilities and a lack of public awareness.
The concepts developed include a communication platform that speeds up the internal processing of complaints in cooperation between AWB and the City of Cologne. Another concept is the Pizza Box Station, which offers a special disposal option for pizza boxes and thus prevents garbage cans from becoming blocked. The BinPoints game motivates citizens to collect waste and receive rewards for doing so – a playful incentive for a clean city. The concepts were presented to the stakeholders involved and are now being further developed and implemented in the city of Cologne.
